Maths Grade 8

Revision One
Estimation and approximation

Recall that

A. Estimation is done roughly

1. We use rounded off valies
2. We use units to estimate

B. Approximation is done by rounding off to the nearest
    1.  10, 100, 1000
     2. To the nearest significant figure
     3. To the nearest decimal place

Please refer to your notes on this topic for more steps
Please solve the following

Assignment 1
Revision test 8 pg 58 new general mathematics
Number 1 - 10
Please solve in your maths note book and note it as assignment 1

Corrections
question 7
there are 334 pages
there are 460 words per or for one page
therefore
334 ✕ 460= 153640 words in the book

Question 8
60 min = 1 hour
24 hour = 1 day
365 days = 1 year
therefore
60 ✕ 24 ✕ 365 ✕ 14 = 7358400 min for one person
for both friends 7358400 ✕ 2 =14716800 min

Question 9
one pace = 82cm
he walked a total of 6854 paces
therefore
Total distance between villages = 82 ✕ 6854
=562028 cm
but the question required the answer to be in kilometer "estimate in km...."
there fore convert 562028cm to kilometer
100cm = 1m
1000 meter = 1 km
100,000cm = 1km
Therefore

562028 ÷ 100,000 = 5.62028km
Total distance between villages in kilometre is 5.62028km

Question 10
1 bucket = 8.8 litres
1 tank = 10,000kl
Total number of bucket drawn per week from the tank = 848 buckets
total number of kilolitres left = ?
  1. find the number of buckets in litres i.e. 8.8 ✕ 848 =7462.4litres
  2. convert 7462.4litres to kilolitres i.e. since 1000 litre is 1 kilolitres therefore 7462.4 ÷ 1000 = 7.4624kilolitres
  3. subtract 7.4624kilolitres from the total quantity of water in the tank i.e. 10,000 - 7.4624 = 9992.5376 kilolitres.
Note:
  • solve number 1 - 6
  • copy this as corrections
  • proceed to the next revison exercise
  • expect the next exercise next monday
